HAIP Response to BVA Comments on Daily Mail, UK

Halal Assure-IP (HAIP) requested Mr John Blackwell, President of British Veterinary Association (BVA) for an explanation on his quotes published in the Daily Mail on April 12th, 2014, that have misled the British public, the Government and the Local Trading Standard Agencies on the issue of unstunned Halal Slaughter.

  1. In his explanation to Assure-IP Mr Blackwell states “Sheep and Goatsachieve insensibility in 20 seconds”. This implies that the information published in the article, where Mr Blackwell confirmedthat according to the latest scientific research on unstunned slaughter animals like sheep feel excruciating pain for as long as 30 seconds after their throats are cut, is baseless and without any scientific evidence.
  2. He confirmed that the word “excruciating” was not used by him signifying that the animal does not receive the kind of pain as described by the word.
  3. He also confirmed the WASK only requires equine to not see the killing of another equine i.e. with the exception of horses it is NOT a breach of the law to slaughter animals in the sight of other animals, as falsely stated in the report. In fact it is the Islamic dietary law that states that it is preferable to not slaughter an animal in the sight of animals waiting to be slaughtered.

Halal Assure-IP appreciates Mr Blackwell for clearing his stance on the information published in the article. Halal Assure-IP urges the media to get the facts right before publishing and disapproves the use of deliberately misunderstood and selective evidence to sell the story.
